Apple has its own share of patent infringement
lawsuits and a new one is filed just recently. A Florida-based company
called Operating Systems Solutions (OSS) claims that Apple’s use of
“fast booting operation” for OS X violates at least one protected
patent, which details OSS’ so-called four-step method for quick booting.
The eyebrow-raising part of this patent is that it involves files
like config.sys and autoexec.bat,
which are very common in many
operating systems.
Another interesting detail about the patent in question that it was originally granted to LG Electronics
back in 2002, but somehow the little-known OSS claimed the patent as
its own. It is unsure whether LG has anything to do with the suit.
The case was filed in Florida Middle District Court, presided by
Judge James S. Moody. Although this is a patent infringement case, OSS
is actually requesting for Injunctive Relief,
or a mere stoppage to Apple’s implementation of the operation
mentioned. That is why some legal analysts find it odd for OSS to be
seeking for damages.
