Apple’s Distant Cousin

Still seeking out that universal remote that not only controls the TV, but all other electronics around the house? Then, Belkin has the solution with the WeMo Switch, a distant but proud cousin to the Apple family.

The WeMo Switch allows the user to turn any electronic device on or off with a touch on the Apple device.

Perfect for everyday electronic appliances such as lamps, electric fans, and even curling irons, the WeMo Switch was built for your convenience and lifestyle. You can even use it for pranks on unaware kids.

The WeMo Switch’s design comes nothing too spectacular, looking like an oversized adapter plug. However bulky it is, set up itself is very simple: connect it to your electronic device, then plug it in, and once that’s done, a small LED indicator will notify users its WiFi capability. From there, you will need to connect it to your Apple device, access the WeMo App, which can be downloaded for free in the Apple Store, and have control over your device.

Using, the WeMo Switch is a seamless experience, as pressing the button from your Apple product the electronic device responds with little to no delay.

The WeMo App can be downloaded for free on iTunes and once it’s all set up, three functions can be accessed: The first being a remote on and off switch for your electronic devices. You can even customize names and images for each deviceson the app. The second, is enabling a timed sequence when the Switch turns on or off, by setting the time, date, and day of when to turn on and to turn off the device. And third, WeMo integrates via WiFi that allows complex controls using the Internet.

All the setup will be saved in the Internet, so even when WeMo and the Apple device has been disconnected, the rules will not be lost.

Sadly, one WeMo Switch equals to one electronic device, so it wouldn’t work if you attached it to an extension cord. So, if you want your entire home to be controlled with your iPhone, iPod, or iPad, you’ll need to get more WeMo Switches. With more Switches, you can control as much or as little of your home as you see fit.

A slight issue on WeMo Switch, is when first plugging it in, you have to wait for a couple of seconds before being able to turn the device itself on. But once it’s on, everything should go on smoothly. Another small issue is its three-pronged outlet, which you’ll most likely need another adapter to give you those nice round or flat outlets.

The WeMo Switch isn’t that spectacular, if truth be told. But if you’re also one who enjoys impressing other people, then the WeMo Switch can contribute to your showmanship. It’s also a good way of setting up lights outside your home, which is a great way to scare off potential intruders, when you hear something suspecious.

The WeMo requires only WiFi network and is accessible to Apple devices from 3rd generation iPod Touch, iPhone 3G, and iPad, up to their latest versions.
